While spiders eat insects you don’t want in your home, including roaches, flies, moths, and earwigs, too many arachnids cause problems. An increase in your residence’s spider population can indicate insect infestations since they provide food sources. If your home features poisonous spiders, they can bite you and your family, causing serious allergic reactions. And while spider control services eliminate the arachnids from your home, it’s vital to know why they “move in” to begin with.

Why Your Home Features Too Many Arachnids

1. Clutter

Spiders love clutter. They use storage areas under sinks, beds, and in closets to weave their webs, as well as piles of paper, magazines, and books. Dark, cluttered areas also provide ideal spaces for the arachnids to lay eggs. Organize storage areas and keep other clutter from piling up to discourage “spider housing.”

2. Easy Access

Arachnids, insects, and rodents constantly look for shelter, water, and food, all of which your home provides. Use caulk to seal foundation holes and cracks, as well as gaps around windows and doors. Weatherstripping materials and door draft stoppers also provide spider control.

3. Excessive Dust & Dirt

Not only do spiders love clutter, but they also enjoy dirt and grime that attract other insects and provide hiding spots. Maintain a clean home to keep the eight-legged visitors out. Vacuum, wipe down applicable surfaces with white vinegar and water, and don’t forget to dust, especially around light fixtures and under the furniture.

4. Plants

Plants and other vegetation close to your home provide welcome food and shelter sources for spiders, as do firewood piles. Relocate plants surrounding your home’s perimeter and keep firewood stacks at least 20 feet away from the house to discourage arachnid, insect, and vermin infestations.
