Whether you are at the grocery store or late for work, it is never a good time to realize your trunk won’t open. However, it could be helpful to understand why this might occur so you can calmly call a locksmith and explain the issue. To help alleviate some stress, here are four reasons why the trunk is stuck.

Common Reasons You’re Locked Out

1. Keys Left in the Trunk

It only takes a second to lock the keys in the trunk. Maybe you thought they were in your pocket, or perhaps you were unloading groceries and didn’t realize that you set them down. If the car is locked as well, a quick call to a locksmith can get you on your way.

2. Broken Trunk Lock

If your trunk doesn’t open, there could be a problem with the lock itself. Most vehicles have a two-part system consisting of a locking mechanism and a lower latch that clicks into place when the trunk closes. Some of the possible issues include a jammed latch, damaged spring, or a broken key tumbler. Call a locksmith and schedule an appointment for a lock or latch replacement.

3. Non-Responsive Key Fob

locksmithThe key fob is used to control the car remotely. The issue with this technology is that if it malfunctions or is programmed incorrectly, then your car or trunk will remain locked without a manual key. If you are having this issue, take your key fob to the dealership or a locksmith to be reprogrammed.

4. Trunk Lock Actuator Isn’t Working

The trunk lock actuator makes it easy to open it by pressing a button on the key fob or inside your vehicle. Similar to the key fob, if this malfunctions, then the trunk with remained locked. However, instead of attempting to repair or reprogram it, it would be more efficient to take your vehicle to a mechanic to get a new actuator.
