Any time your skin is injured, whether from a cut, acne, surgery, or excessive stretching, it’s most likely going to leave a scar. Scars are a natural part of the healing process, but depending on where the mark is located, it could leave you feeling self-conscious. Some scars fade over time, but others require a scar removal procedure to be less noticeable.

Why Do Scars Form?

A minor scratch or scrape won't leave a permanent mark on your skin because the damage isn’t deep enough. However, scarring will occur when the deep layer of your skin—the dermis—is injured. When this happens, your body naturally forms more of the protein collagen to heal the damage. However, this tissue is different from your existing skin and therefore stands out, creating the scar.

The type of wound you have and how well it heals will determine the type of scar you have. For example, if fat or muscle under the skin is lost, the scar can look sunken or resemble a pit. If your body overproduces collagen during healing, you may develop a raised or keloid scar. If your wound is located on a joint, or is the result of stretched skin such as during pregnancy, it will appear as a stretched, possibly shiny area.

What Are My Options for Scar Removal?

scar removalCertain procedures can significantly reduce the appearance of unwanted marks. Topical scar removal treatments such as vitamin E or cocoa butter cream can diminish the appearance of minor marks, especially when the scars are fresh. Older scars, however, may require more aggressive treatments. Some of the options include:

  • Dermabrasion: Using specialized equipment, your dermatologist removes the surface layer of skin, helping the scar blend in with the rest of your skin.
  • Laser resurfacing: Similar to dermabrasion, the skin doctor uses a special laser to remove the surface layer of skin. Laser scar revision can also focus directly on the scar to lighten the color or make it flatter.
  • Chemical peels: Chemical peels remove the top layer of skin and reduce the appearance of superficial scars on the face.
