The Department of Transportation, or DOT, requires annual comprehensive inspections of large commercial vehicles to ensure highway safety. There are six levels of commercial truck inspections; however, most trucks undergo standard Level 1 inspections that check the vehicle as well as driver competence. The following tips will help prepare you for this inspection, which may require a visit to a truck body shop.

How Can You Prepare for a Semitruck DOT Inspection?

1. Look for Signs of Exterior Wear

Walk around your semitruck to check for damaged or faulty parts, such as worn windshield wipers, loose mirror brackets, broken coupling mechanisms, and windows or doors that don’t close completely.

Examine the tires for worn tread, bulges, blisters, nails, cracks, low pressure, and any other damage, and check the wheels for bent or worn areas. Inspect the head and taillights for fogged or cracked lenses.

If any part needs repairs or replacements, make an appointment with your truck body shop as soon as possible.

2. Test Your Lights, Horn, & Engine

You may want to bring your semi to the truck body shop to perform additional engine system checks — including the condition of the radiator, power steering, and air compressor pumps.

3. Check the Cabin

Vacuum and wipe down the interior of your semi, removing any empty food containers and other large debris. Make sure the heating and cooling systems are operating efficiently. Your dashboard lights and hazard signals should be functional, and your seat belt should extend easily without excessive force.
