If your front door suddenly stops locking correctly, or fails to unlock without a struggle, you may think the issue is due to aging equipment, poor installation, or even a break-in attempt. However, in some cases, problems with single-latch locks and deadbolts may result from changes in the weather. To help you keep your entryways functional every month of the year, learn more about a few common weather-related lock issues and how you can address them.

What Lock Problems Are Caused By Weather?

1. Expansion

Doors may expand into their frames in the summer when heat and humidity cause the wood to swell. This process can cause deadbolts and other locks to stick, making it more difficult for you to open your door.

If the door appears to be sagging or rubbing the top of the frame, you may need to tighten the hinge screws. This will hold the door steady, so the lock bolt aligns with the switch plate.

If you notice that the sides of the door are swelling against the frame, try lightly sanding the interior edge to prevent sticking.

2. Contraction

deadboltIn the winter, wood doors will have the opposite issue they have in the summer. When exposed to cold weather, the material will contract, possibly causing the door to shrink slightly. This may make it difficult for the deadbolt or latch to align with the switch plate. In this case, unscrew, adjust, and re-tighten the switch plate, so it's properly aligned with the bolt.

3. Freezing

When moisture is trapped within the lock mechanisms, it can freeze when temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This may cause the lock to stick or make it impossible for a key to enter and turn.

To prevent this problem, lubricate the keyhole with an oil-based spray to keep moisture from building up within the components.

If you do experience freezing, you might be able to resolve the problem by warming the lock carefully with a high dryer. Inserting a warm key into the hole may also melt any frozen components. However, if you sense that the equipment is damaged, it’s best to call a locksmith for repair or replacement.
