Truck drivers need to be extra careful in the winter, especially on OTR hauling routes. Between the icy roads, lowered visibility, and chilly conditions, there will be many obstacles along the way. Thankfully, there are a few effective steps to prepare your vehicle for the seasonal onslaught. Here’s how you can maximize the safety of your truck before and during winter.

How to Prepare for Winter OTR Hauling

1. Test the Battery

Batteries see a lot of wear in the summer, but frigid temperatures can sap battery life at an unexpected rate. As the temperature drops for the season, check your battery. Make sure the connections are secure and inspect for damage. Test the starting and charging system, and have faulty, corroded, or dead components replaced.

2. Check the Air Dryer

Air dryers keep moisture from entering the brake system, preventing corrosion and freezing in cold weather. These problems can result in dangerous malfunctioning brakes.

To avoid this, regularly verify that the air valves of each drain tank are functioning properly and drain any water. For extra peace of mind, have your air dryer serviced before winter arrives.

3. Get Fuel Additives

OTR haulingParaffin, the wax component of diesel fuel, crystallizes in freezing temperatures. The mixture results in a gel-like solution that clogs the fuel filter.

This can lead to a variety of problems, including engine failure. Fuel additives combat gelling and should be used throughout the winter, especially when temperatures are below freezing.

4. Keep an Emergency Kit

You should always have an emergency kit ready for OTR hauling jobs, but winter calls for extra supplies. In case you get stranded, pack a first aid kit, flashlight and batteries, extra food and bottled water, flares, and a radio. Additionally, make sure your truck contains a snow shovel, tire chains, snow boots, hats, scarves, gloves, and thick blankets.

For your truck’s needs, keep extra coolant, washer fluid, and engine oil on hand. In the best-case scenario, you won’t ever need these supplies, but it can’t hurt to be prepared.

5. Stay Ahead on Maintenance

OTR hauling vehicles do a lot of heavy lifting, so it’s imperative that they remain in peak condition. As winter arrives, there are certain components you should evaluate regularly. Periodically check fluid levels, fuel and air filters, tires, wiper blades, the cooling system, and lights. Although it may seem tedious on the road, maintenance will keep your truck running and help ensure your safety.
