As you age, you may find yourself dealing with problems you never had before. The body gradually loses its ability to fight certain health problems as it gets older, and oral issues are no exception. However, with the right knowledge, regular dentist visits, and a little extra effort, most of those problems can be handled effectively. Here’s a closer look.

What Are Common Dental Issues for Seniors?

If you’ve developed other health conditions as you’ve grown older, it’s possible that you’ve had to take medications or accept certain treatments that inhibit saliva flow and dry out your mouth. Dry mouth facilitates tooth decay because there’s less saliva to naturally keep your mouth clean throughout the day. Medications may also weaken your sense of taste or facilitate fungal growth inside your mouth.

If you’ve consistently used or consumed products known for staining teeth over the years, like tobacco, wine, coffee, and fruit juice, you may find that your teeth have darkened. This is a sign to visit the dentist—the problem could be remedied with a teeth whitening appointment, but it’s also important to rule out something more serious.

More urgently, seniors are at a higher risk of developing cavities, root decay, and gum disease, especially if they use tobacco or have anemia or diabetes. If these issues progress far enough, they often require tooth extraction, which can then lead to jaw pain, headaches, digestive trouble, speech impediments, and sleep apnea if not corrected with dentures or dental implants.

How Can Seniors Maintain Their Dental Health?

dentistIt’s more important than ever to brush for two minutes twice daily and floss once a day. Add an antimicrobial mouthwash to your daily routine as well. Visit a dentist every six months or so for a teeth cleaning, examination, and any treatments that are needed.

There are additional ways for seniors to care for their teeth. A diet heavy with fruits, vegetables, and dairy products that are low in starch and sugar will not only strengthen your metabolism, bones, joints, and energy levels but also prevent the accumulation of tartar and plaque. Stay hydrated by drinking mostly water, which will reduce the occurrence of dry mouth.

If you have dentures, make sure they fit well and soak them in a cleaning solution every night. Take care of dental implants, bridges, and crowns the same way you would your natural teeth.
