Outdated or damaged insulation can cause many problems for your home. Your energy bills will skyrocket, and you may also notice uncomfortable drafts and loud noises. These aren’t the only consequences, however. Below are a few of the less obvious signs that it’s time to replace your insulation so that you can keep your home efficient and comfortable.

Is It Time for New Home Insulation?

1. Wetness

There are many reasons why insulation might get wet, such as a roof leak, a flood in the basement, or blocked attic vents. Once it gets wet, it can lead to mold growth that can create health problems for household members—particularly those with asthma or other conditions. The moisture will also render the insulation ineffective. Unfortunately, it still won’t work properly even if you dry it out, so it will need to be replaced.

2. Pest Infestations

Pests love the areas with insulation—particularly attics and crawl spaces. Squirrels, rodents, snakes, raccoons, bats, and opossums are common infiltrators. Even if you remove the animals, they’ll likely have left behind problems such as feces. You’ll want to clear out everything, clean it, and replace the affected insulation.

3. Ice Dams & Iciclesmountain home insulation

When insulation isn’t working properly, the attic will get unusually warm in the winter. This happens because heat rises, escapes out of the vents, and then melts the snow on your roof. If your roof doesn’t have snow, it will still be unusually warm. Any water dripping off the edge into the gutters will freeze as soon as it leaves the roof and cools down. This creates either an icicle or an ice dam in the gutter.
