Light bulbs come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and wattages. As a result, although they're basic in function, the intricacies behind finding the right bulb can be complicated. If the light in your lamp keeps blowing out, it's important to determine if you're buying the wrong bulbs before calling for electrical services. Learn more about the various ways to select a light bulb below.

Watts

The wattage of your light bulb is the amount of energy required to power it. Incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat rather than light, which is why they're less environmentally friendly. To save money on your electric bill, opt for an LED light bulb instead.

Lumens

The lumens indicate the amount of actual light that's displayed by your bulb. A single lumen is the amount of light emitted by a candle within a one-foot radius. While LED bulbs use less wattage, they typically make up for the lack of energy by having higher lumens. As a result, you can choose a more vibrant LED bulb to brighten a dim room while still staying within the appropriate wattage.

Kelvin

The Kelvin rating determines the color of the light. Colors change from white-orange to white to blue-white as an object becomes hotter. Bulbs in the 2700 to 2800K range produce a warm, yellow color. From 3000 to 3200K, the light becomes whiter, and from 3500 to 4000K, you get a pure white light. From 5000 to 6500K, a blue hue is added to the coloring.

Light Fixtures

Electrical ServicesWhen choosing a light bulb, you must consider the fixture, as different lamps and lights have different needs. For example, an enclosed fixture traps in heat, which could damage an LED bulb. Furthermore, if an installation requires 60-watt bulbs and you use a 100-watt bulb instead, the temperature will go beyond the recommendations, causing faster burnout.

If you need more light in your room but have maxed out your wattage allowances, have an electrical services technician add extra fixtures rather than burning out bulb after bulb. The technician can point the light directly where you want it and will upgrade the circuit breaker if needed.
