A surprise proposal can be dreamy and romantic, but it becomes tricky when you’re trying to find the perfect engagement ring. You don’t want to ruin the surprise by asking her ring size or measuring her finger. The following are just a few ways to learn her ring size before popping the question.

How to Find Out Your Girlfriend’s Ring Size

1. Ask Her Friends

engagement ringYou might be surprised by how much her friends know about her -- ring size included. Her best friends might be able to provide an exact number. If they aren’t sure, they can ask her more subtly. For example, they might act like they are buying her a gift or want to purchase friendship rings for the group.

2. Borrow a Ring

When your girlfriend is out of the house or preoccupied, take a ring that she doesn’t often wear to a jeweler. While she likely doesn’t wear it on her left ring finger, see if you can find one that she wears on her right hand. The jeweler can measure the ring and base the engagement ring size on that number. If the ring cannot be snuck out, trace the inside of the ring on a piece of paper.

3. Estimate a Size Up

Sometimes it’s hard to find out your girlfriend’s ring size without being obvious. To avoid ruining the surprise, take a best guess at her ring size. The average size is a six for women, so that can provide a place to start. Note whether her hands are smaller or larger than the average woman’s. Then guess a size and take it one step up. If you guessed wrong, the jeweler can resize the ring to make it smaller.
