If you can't seem to rest at night, your HVAC may be to blame. Have a heating and air conditioning contractor inspect the system to ensure its functionality and efficiency. If they find nothing amiss, consider taking the following actions to improve your quality of sleep.

3 HVAC Adjustments for Promoting Restful Sleep

1. Lower the Temperature

Most people find a temperature of between 70 and 80 degrees comfortable. While 75 degrees is a reasonable setting for the rest of your house, though, consider turning the temperature down in the bedroom. Sleep experts recommend setting the bedroom temperature between 60 and 67 degrees. Body temperature naturally dips during sleep, and facilitating this drop by lying down in a cool environment can actually help you fall asleep faster.

2. Adjust the Humidity

Researchers agree that the bedroom should have a humidity level of between 30 and 50%. Any lower and the dry air will irritate the nasal passages. Any higher and the air will feel oppressive. The excess moisture will also contribute to mold and mildew, which can trigger asthma and allergies, making it virtually impossible for vulnerable individuals to sleep soundly.

3. Facilitate Airflow

Adequate ventilation is essential for getting a good night’s sleep. Constant circulation improves air quality considerably. Talk to your heating and air conditioning contractor about the ventilation in each bedroom. Sometimes, turning on a ceiling fan and leaving the door open is enough to facilitate airflow. Other times, though, it may be necessary to upgrade the entire ventilation system.
