A fever is the body's natural defense against infection. Unfortunately, this immunological response can be a distressing experience for a child and their parents. If your little one has a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, it is important to see a health care provider as soon as possible. If their fever is lower, here are a few steps to take and avoid at home to keep them comfortable as they recover.

Do:

Provide plenty of fluids.

Fevers cause fluid loss through sweating, which can lead to dehydration and make a person feel even sicker. Provide your child with plenty of nourishing fluids like water, fruit juice, and broth.

For older children, electrolyte-infused sports drinks can be beneficial for hydration. For younger kids, stick to water and oral rehydration solutions if they also have diarrhea.

Apply a cool compress or light blanket.

A child with a fever may go from sweating in one moment to shivering the next. Always try to maintain their body at a more moderate temperature.

For a child who is feeling hot, apply a cool compress to the forehead. When they feel chilly, cover them with a light blanket. Avoid ice packs, cold baths, warm clothing, and heavy blankets, which can all make the fever worse.

Don't:

Starve the fever.

health careIn most cases, this old adage isn't helpful. While it’s common for a feverish child to feel less hungry, some light sustenance will help them maintain their strength and prevent lightheadedness and weakness.

A full, heavy meal isn't necessary, but light yet filling dishes are helpful. Consider soup, toast, crackers, or applesauce.

Give them aspirin.

Children younger than three years old should never take aspirin. While the drug is safer for older children and teens, you should also avoid it if the child is recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms.

Instead, ask your health care provider if acetaminophen or ibuprofen is safe for your child, then follow the label's dosage instructions.
