Because their natural food resources are often minimal, raccoons tend to raid trash cans looking for nourishment. They are also unusually curious and nimble animals, which means they'll make short work of garbage bags, trash can lids, and other barriers to getting their paws on food. Fortunately, you can do some at-home pest control and prevent raccoons from getting into the trash; below are a few suggestions to help you out.

How to Deter Raccoons From the Garbage

1. Secure Your Trash

Invest in a heavy-duty trash can designed to withstand pests, rodents, and other wildlife. Always double-bag your garbage. You should also only put the trash can on the curb on the morning of collection. Loop a strong bungee cord through each handle of the can, stretching it taut across the lid to hold it firmly in place.

2. Set Out a Pest Repellent

Repellents utilize scents or tastes that are unappealing to pests and deter them from entering a certain area. They are available in either granular or liquid forms; to achieve the most effective levels of pest control, it is advisable to set both types out. Bear in mind that they will need to be reapplied frequently to maintain a strong odor and flavor, so check the package instructions for exact dosage frequency.

3. Turn on the Radio

A human voice is often enough to scare them off, which makes the radio a popular deterrent. Position a radio near the trash, and tune it to any station. You want it to be at an audible level that the raccoons will hear it, but not so loud that it will disrupt the neighborhood. Make sure the radio is securely tied down or well-hidden in an inaccessible area; raccoons have been known to run off with radios.
