There are many funeral arrangement options to choose from to give your deceased loved one the best goodbye possible. Wakes and viewings are held before the main ceremony, and you can choose between a funeral and a memorial service to lay them to rest. The guide below discusses these different options in more detail.

Understanding Different Funeral Arrangements

Viewing

A viewing gives mourners a chance to come together and express their sympathy before the funeral or memorial service. Usually, the body of the deceased loved one is on display, but displaying the cremation urn is perfectly acceptable, too. Family and friends are welcome to attend the viewing, and it’s held at a funeral home. While it usually takes place a day or two before the funeral, it can be held on the day of the ceremony as well.

Wake

A wake is similar to a viewing, except it’s a Catholic tradition, so families follow a religious path during this ceremony. The service is conducted by a priest, and the rosary is usually said. Just like a viewing, the body is generally on display, and the service takes place before the funeral.

Funeral Service

Generally, the dress code is black and formal. The service can be held at a church or funeral home, and can be held up to a week after the deceased passes away, especially if family has to come from out of town. After the family says their goodbyes, the casket is transported to a cemetery and buried.

Memorial Service

A memorial service is very similar to a funeral, except their body is not present. This service is often chosen if the deceased has been cremated or their remains were already buried. Many families choose to display their loved one’s photos at a memorial service and follow the deceased’s wishes, such as saying a prayer, playing their favorite song, or serving a meal as a family.
