Roll-off or temporary dumpsters are excellent solutions for storing and hauling all sorts of debris from the project site. If it’s your first time with dumpster rentals, choosing the right size can be a little tricky. The guide below can help you decide the correct container size so you don’t rent an over- or undersized container.

How Much Is the Capacity Limit?

Keep in mind that each variation has a weight limit on the debris it can accommodate. Most of the time, the term “weight limit” pertains to the hauling capacity of the dumpster truck, which tows the container and moves it to the landfill for disposal. If you overload, you may have to pay fees at the landfill or disposal site, which can be quite steep.

Roll-off dumpster rentals often come in three sizes, with the smallest measuring 10 yards and the biggest measuring 30 yards. Each one can handle different items:

  • 10-Yard: The dimensions of 10-yard dumpsters vary across rental companies, but it can hold 10 cubic yards in volume. It roughly translates to two to three tons or 4,000 to 6,000 pounds of debris.

  • 20-Yard: As the name implies, this container is just enough for 20 cubic yards of discarded materials. It’s equivalent to 120 13-gallon trash bags, 5,000 to 7,000 pounds of waste, and 2.5 to 3.5 tons of trash.

  • 30-Yard: A 30-yard dumpster rental can typically hold about 4.5 to five tons of debris. The capacity limit is 10,000 pounds at the most or 180 packed 13-gallon disposal bags.

What Can Fit Inside Them?

dumpster rentalsRoll-off dumpster rentals come in handy when you’re decluttering a garage or attic, overhauling the garden, clearing out unused plot, or doing renovations on your home that leave bulky, heavy debris behind. However, estimating how much fits inside the container is not easy. Here is a brief comparison:

  • 10-Yard: A 10-yard bin can hold discarded materials from small remodeling projects such as replacing old flooring, taking out walls, and renovating a half-bathroom or home office. It can also handle debris from driveway repairs, patio removal, and new landscaping.

  • 20-Yard: For more extensive construction projects like roof tear-offs, bathroom or kitchen remodeling, and interior or floor plan overhaul, a 20-yard dumpster will suffice. It’s big enough for accommodating debris from downsizing, removing trees, and taking out driveways and concrete paths.

  • 30-Yard: Most remodeling contractors choose a 30-yard container for sizeable projects like home additions, basement renovations, and demolition. It’s also handy for clearing out estates, old homes, and thick growth on land for site development.
