Winter weather is known for causing a variety of household issues, and frozen plumbing is one of the most common. Your Septic System may be vulnerable to freezing on the coldest days, which is why preparation in advance of winter weather is crucial. Below, Lentz Septic gives you a quick guide on how to get your septic system ready for the winter season.

4 Ways to Prepare Your Septic System for Winter

1. Cover the Tank

When temperatures drop below freezing, your septic tank might need extra insulation to avoid freezing and cracking. Cover it with a frost blanket or a layer of mulch* that will shield your tank from moisture, prevent frost buildups, and keep the soil warm enough to prevent freezing.

2. Keep Using It

It’s important for fluids to continue running through your septic pipes since the flow of wastewater creates enough friction to prevent freezing. If you plan to be away from home during the colder months, have a friend or family member house sit so that your septic system will remain in use.

3. Schedule Pumping

septic systemSchedule septic tank pumping in advance of the winter season before your tank is more difficult for your contractor to access. Pumping will clear your pipes of buildups and blockages that could result in the pipe bursting.

4. Don’t Park Over It

You should always avoid parking heavy vehicles and machinery over your septic system, as doing so may damage the tank. This is particularly important during the winter, since soil impaction may cause frost to penetrate deeper into the soil and freeze your tank components.
