Snow and freezing temperatures characterize New York winters, and it’s not uncommon for drivers to need windshield repair as a result. With careful maintenance, you can avoid cracks, chips, and broken auto glass caused by freezing temperatures. Keep these do’s and don’ts in mind as you move through the winter.

Do:

Get cracks and chips repaired as soon as possible.

If you spot an issue with your windshield, don’t wait to get it repaired. Cold weather can cause auto glass to contract, and existing chips and cracks will expand as a result. Your windshield could suffer severe damage if moisture gets into a crack and freezes.

Use an ice scraper or brush.

windshield repairIf you need to remove ice from your windshield, an ice scraper is the best tool for the job. If you need to remove snow, use a brush with non-abrasive bristles. Any other tools risk scratching or chipping your auto glass.

Don’t:

Pour hot water on the windshield.

Sudden changes in temperature will cause your windshield to expand and contract, possibly damaging it. Placing hot water on auto glass can cause the glass to expand so rapidly that it shocks and shatters the windshield.

Don’t use icy windshield wipers.

If your windshield is icy, your windshield wipers likely are too. Turning the heat on inside your car while you scrape away the ice will help thaw the ice on your wipers. Wait until the wipers are clear to turn them on. Otherwise, you risk scratching your windshield.
