Winter is one of the worst times of the year for roof leaks—and one of the major reasons is ice dams. When they form, they trap water, often causing it to back up onto the roof, where it can damage shingles. The guide below explains what they are and how to prevent them.

What Are Ice Dams?

Heat from your home can penetrate the roofing material above it and partially melt any snow sitting on top. The water trickles down to your eaves. The water freezes again, forming an icy barrier that can trap even more water running down. This can also happen in your gutters if they are clogged with debris that prevents the water from draining away.

What Damage Do Ice Dams Cause?

A small pool of water forms behind an ice dam on your roof. Shingles were designed to shed water that pours down from above, and are vulnerable to water seeping up from below, so roof leaks start to form. The water trickles into the attic, causing wood rot, mold, and matted insulation.

With enough insulation, you can prevent the roof from growing warm enough to melt ice sitting on top of it. A roofing contractor can also install a protective membrane under your shingles so that if water gets through them, it still won't leak into your attic. Regular gutter cleaning can prevent ice dams from forming in these channels—a prospect made easier if you have leaf guards installed.
