Locks help keep you secure, but there are times when they may need to be rekeyed. If you’ve just moved in, lost your key, or experienced an attempted break-in, getting a locksmith to rekey the lock allows you to use a new key without having to replace the entire system.

Removing the Doorknob

When your lock is being rekeyed, the first thing a locksmith will do is find the proper rekeying kit with tools to fit your door. Tools include a spanner, plastic follower tube, and catch tool. The doorknob will be removed, and this is done by turning the knob clockwise, revealing the catch hole, inserting the device into it, and then pulling the knob off once a clicking noise is heard. Once the knob is off, the cap can be removed using the spanner to reveal the cylinder.

Changing the Cylinder

locksmith Cincinnati, OHThe professionals working on the lock will use the spanner tool again, this time to remove the C-clip that holds the cylinder together. They’ll then insert the old key and turn it while pushing on the other side with the follower tube to remove the cylinder plug. Once the plug is out, the old pins can be dumped out of the lock to make room for the new ones, which will allow a new key to be used.

Replacing the Pins

When a lock is rekeyed, it is critical to make sure the correct sized pins are put back in. Locksmiths do this by inserting a new key into the cylinder and using tweezers to add pins from the rekeying kit. Once all the pins sit flush with the cylinder while the key is inserted, the plug will be replaced and secured with the C-clip. They’ll push the cylinder back into the doorknob, replace the cap, and secure it to the door to test that it works properly with your new key.
