Driving safely can be a bit trickier once winter weather sets in. However, if you take a few simple steps now to get your vehicle ready, you can feel more confident and prepared once those first cold days hit. Winter conditions can impact every part of your car, from the engine to the tires, but here are some of the most essential areas to focus on.

3 Steps for Winterizing Your Vehicle

1. Check Your Tires

Tires can’t grip the road very well when there are icy conditions; therefore, sufficient tire tread and pressure are even more vital during winter. Check both of these factors this fall, and have your tires filled or replaced if necessary.

2. Top Off Fluids

tires-High-Point-NCCoolant and anti-freeze regulate the temperature of your engine, which can prevent it from freezing in extreme cold. Have these fluids checked and changed at your local auto repair shop to prevent any problems throughout the season. You can also get an oil change and check your windshield washer fluid while you’re there.

3. Assemble an Emergency Kit

Even with all of the right auto maintenance, you can get into an accident or experience unexpected vehicle troubles during extreme weather. Have an emergency kit in your vehicle with first aid supplies, flashlights, an ice scraper, kitty litter to provide traction on icy roads, and road flares. Ideally, you should keep most of these items in your vehicle throughout the year, but check everything now, and add the necessary items — like shovels or ice scrapers — before winter weather kicks in.
