While first impressions are critical, you should conduct a thorough inspection during an apartment rental viewing. Knowing what to look for will tell you about the apartment’s condition and what to expect from living there. Include each of the often-overlooked items below on your list while considering a rental property.

What to Look for When Touring an Apartment Rental

1. Security

You should feel safe at home. Consider the ambiance of the neighborhood you’re looking in; visit at different times of the day to see how secure it feels. See what security features most of the buildings in the neighborhood have. Likewise, your complex should have security in place too. This may include a gated entrance, deadbolts on the doors, window locks, or video surveillance.

Storage can be in short supply, especially in smaller apartments. See how much space there is in closets, the pantry, and the cabinets. You need somewhere to keep all your cleaning supplies, linens, food, dishes, clothing, and other seasonal items. If there isn’t built-in storage, then there should be extra space where you could place a portable wardrobe or shelving unit.

3. General Condition

Look closely at the various rooms of the apartment to get a feel for the condition. Superficial changes such as a new paint job may be covering up worrisome damage. Open the cabinetry under sinks to look for water damage, and check the kitchen drawers to see that they move smoothly and are clean. Test the water pressure in the sinks and shower, and ensure the drains work properly. Check the appliances and light switches. Look at the grout around the sink and tub, and check that plumbing fixtures aren’t rusting.
