Construction contractors use a variety of different types of insulation for their remodeling and renovation projects. Each is designed to improve energy efficiency by preventing air leakage, reducing heat transfer, and regulating indoor temperatures. Before you select the product for your needs, keep these options in mind.

4 Types of Insulation

1. Spray Foam

Sometimes construction contractors discover that they need to fill in minuscule gaps that weren’t noticeable during the renovation phase. Spray foam insulation is made with either latex or polyurethane and is designed to be sprayed directly into small spaces. It’s also used to seal openings around doors and windows. It cures fast, and contractors can paint or stain the material after spraying so that it blends in with the surrounding material.

2. Loose Fill

Anchorage, AK construction contractorsTypically made with a recycled paper fiber called cellulose, or fiberglass, loose fill insulation is usually blown in or sprayed into place with state-of-the-art equipment. It’s ideal for applying in areas that are otherwise difficult to reach, like attics and crawl spaces. Contractor can also apply loose fill directly over old insulation that has started to break down for a more effective barrier.

3. Fiberglass Batts

Most fiberglass batts are used to neatly fill in spaces between rafters in attics or between floor joists. They’re available in roll and blanket format. The former must be cut to precise dimensions to fit properly into the space. Contractors commonly apply fiberglass batts in walls, ceilings, and floors.

4. Vapor Barriers

Vapor barrier insulation is designed to limit air loss by wrapping the framework of the structure. Construction contractors often use a house wrap to keep moisture out of the building and to avoid mold damage.
