Tree roots are a common issue behind sewer line repair. They seek out the nutrients in the waste and find a weak spot or crack in the line. They’ll grow into the line, then expand once they get inside and create a blockage. Try to detect the signs of a problem early on and address it before you have a complete blockage or more serious damage.

Guide to Sewer Blockages by Tree Roots

How to Recognize It

Root obstruction will slow down your sewage system, and as the root grows inside the line, that clog will get worse. You may notice first that your drains are working much more slowly throughout the house. You might also hear a gurgling noise as the drains slowly empty.

The damage to the sewer line may create a sewage leak in your yard. You’ll smell sewage while outdoors in the part of your yard that the line runs through. A sinkhole may appear in extreme cases. Stay away from the area and schedule sewer line repair immediately, since a sinkhole caused by sewage may damage your foundation and could be hazardous.

How to Address It

sewer line repairIf you suspect your sewer line is blocked by roots, schedule a video inspection with a licensed plumber. They will send down a small, flexible scope with a camera attached to the end. The footage they get will tell you whether there is a blockage, where it is, and how bad it is. They can use that information to determine what the best course of action is, whether that’s sewer line repair or replacement.

Have the tree removed from that part of the yard. Even if you cut back the root, it will likely just grow back over time and cause the same problem again. When you plant new trees in your yard, research how deep and far the roots will grow when it has fully matured. Do not put new trees in any area where the roots may be able to reach the sewer line.
