The backsplash is often the last decision made when designing a kitchen. Homeowners tend to forget about the impact a backsplash tile can make. The tile can be a statement piece or it can be the perfect element to tie everything together. Either way, its importance doesn’t stop there, it is extremely practical as well.

Take a look at these key topics before you go tile shopping!

1. Stand Out or Blend In?

If you have a killer countertop or bold cabinets you may choose to go with a subtle backsplash tile as to not distract from your favored elements. Those of you who want to use your backsplash to be the wow factor may decide on a fun pattern or color. Either option can hold personality and be the final cherry on top. Below is an example of each and how they both demonstrate style and charm.

2. How Tall Will You Go?

The last few years people have really been challenging the standard rule for how high up your backsplash should go. The truth is...as high as you want! There is nothing wrong with just tiling the space below your cabinets OR going all the way to the ceiling. The decision boils down to your budget and the level of a statement you are trying to make. Those of you with open shelving in your kitchen have a great opportunity to showcase a larger tile display.

3. Grout Colors

If you haven’t shopped for tile within the last 10 years, you have no idea how many grout colors there are. Grout can enhance a design or simply fade away. Re-grouting is a huge pain so this choice should not be made lightly. And don’t be scared by a white grout, most come pre-sealed these days to prevent stains.

FYI, contrasting grout will show more imperfections in the quality of the install so make sure you trust your installer if you go this route.

4. Material

The practical side of a backsplash means easy clean up when you have spaghetti sauce splatters and spilled red wine. That’s why backsplashes are mainly ceramic tile but limiting yourself to one material will limit your design options as well. Most people now-a-days are opting for fancier materials such as glass or natural stones. Taking care of a natural stone tile isn’t as horrible as one may think – as long as it is sealed properly at the time of install. The material decision should be made based on budget (as always) and whether or not you have it in you to give your tile a little extra love when it comes to maintenance.

5. Size

In this case, the size of the tile only matters for two reasons. Smaller tile means more grout lines which means more to keep clean. While bigger tile means more waste and more money spent. Finding the perfect balance in size will keep your budget happy and you won’t catch yourself scrubbing away at the grout as often.

6. Finishing Pieces

The worst thing is falling in love with a beautiful tile and then finding out coordinating trims are not offered. Always ask your sales person to see the trims for whatever product you are looking at before you decide because it could make or break the decision. An alternative is metal edging and that won’t fit everyones style.

A remodel project is without a doubt stressful but you have to slow down, take a breath and remember that you are creating a piece of yourself into the bones of your home. Don’t rush major decisions and most importantly just have fun with it all!
