Whether you’re entertaining friends or chatting with coworkers, going to a happy hour has much to offer. While many people have attended one of these events in the past, you might not be aware of how this tradition began. Here are some interesting facts to share with your friends the next time you’re at your favorite bar and grill’s happy hour.

What Is the Origin of the Happy Hour?

The happy hour concept has dual origins. The Navy held social events referred to as happy hours as far back as 1913. Since the Secretary of the Navy ordered that ships and stations must remain dry, these events were more concerned with dancing, music, and the occasional wrestling match.

The origins of happy hour are also linked to prohibition. It wasn’t permissible to enjoy an alcoholic beverage with your meal, so many people drank at home or at speakeasies, which were illegal drinking establishments. Once drinking became legal again, many restaurants, bars, and grills continued the happy hour concept. Discounted drinks and food menus helped them increase the number of customers visiting their establishments, so it’s still common today.

What Is Happy Hour Like Now?

bar and grillThere are no set rules about happy hour. It’s up to each establishment to decide what to put on their specialized menu and to set the hours patrons can order from it.

Some happy hours offer discounted prices on beers and wines, while others include cocktails as well. Discounts can also change each day — for example, some bars and grills might feature discounts on craft beers on Wednesdays and discounted liquor on Fridays. Many establishments also reduce prices on appetizers and certain meals at this time as well, though it depends on the establishment.
