A burst pipe can be disastrous, causing water damage throughout your living space and a phone call to your plumber to help resolve the issue. However, there are a few steps to take that will help mitigate trouble and restore your property quickly. Here are a few to remember when disaster strikes.

What to Do If a Pipe Bursts

1. Shut Off the Water

Find the main valve and turn off the water supply. If possible, turn off the electricity too, but be mindful if there is water running near an electrical panel. Do not attempt to reach the fuse box if the leak is nearby. Instead, call a professional for assistance.

2. Drain All Faucets

Turn all the cold water faucets on and drain the remaining supply to empty the pipes completely and reduce any built-up pressure. Be sure to flush the toilets, too. Next, drain the hot taps and turn off the water heater and heating system as well.

plumbers3. Call for Help

Contact your plumber and tell them about the burst pipe. Try to give as much information as possible, including any steps you have taken so far, like turning off the water, electricity, and heat.

4. Warm Up the Area

Most pipes burst due to freezing and the expansion of the water inside. Once all the water is drained, turn the heat back on and let the warm air circulate to thaw the pipes. Open up cabinets and closets, especially for pipes along exterior walls.

5. Document & Clean Up

Take photos and document any areas that show water damage, so you have proof for your insurance claim. Don’t throw away damaged possessions until your insurance company has been contacted and you have submitted your paperwork. Once photos are taken, however, you can begin removing water and cleaning the space to prevent mold and mildew growth.
