Successfully completing rehab for alcohol or substance abuse is an accomplishment that certainly deserves recognition. Yet, staying sober afterward can be just as challenging. There are certain triggers that can drive the desire to use or drink again, many of which surface around the holidays. Fortunately, there are some effective strategies you can use to celebrate with your loved ones while staying sober.

How to Maintain Sobriety This Season

1. Put an Action Plan in Place

One way to minimize the risk of relapse is to plan ahead during the holidays. If you’re going out, schedule a phone call with your sponsor or an extra appointment with your counselor ahead of time. Have a distraction strategy in place for cravings, such as going for a walk.

2. Keep Your Hands Full

People are less likely to offer you a drink if they see one in your hand. Grab yourself an alcohol-free beverage as soon as you arrive somewhere, and refill it as needed. If you’re concerned about limited offerings at your destination, feel free to bring your own soda or other preferred beverage.

3. Avoid Known Triggers

If you have a family member who always offers you a drink or makes comments that send your anxiety skyrocketing, do what you can to avoid one-on-one conversations with them. You should also steer clear of any situations that will put you in the midst of direct exposure to drugs or alcohol, such as trips to the bar or reconnecting with friends who use.

rehab4. Practice Self-Care

You may have developed some self-care strategies such as deep breathing or meditation during rehab. Feel free to revisit these techniques as needed throughout the season. You should also schedule time for yourself to engage in activities you enjoy, such as playing with pets, seeing a movie, or soaking in a long bath.

5. Prepare Responses

Be prepared for people to ask how you’re doing—or to pry even deeper into your personal life. How much you’d like to share is completely up to you, but avoid making that call on the spot. Instead, have answers at the ready for any questions about your addiction, experiences in rehab, or recovery.
