A migraine is an intense headache typically accompanied by nausea, visual disturbances, and sensitivity to light and sound. If you experience them and take birth control pills, the contraceptives may increase their severity. In this case, a gynecologist will help you find the right solution. Here’s more information to help you understand this correlation.

What to Know About Migraines If You Take Oral Contraceptives

gynecologistMany oral contraceptives contain synthetic forms of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Increasing the levels of these hormones in the body helps prevent ovulation and pregnancy. For people who already experience migraines, however, changes hormonal levels can worsen symptoms. Other common triggers include stress, pollution, and inadequate sleep.

Women who take birth control orally and have histories of migraines with auras are at increased risks of stroke. Not all women who have migraines see auras, which may come in the form of flashes, zigzagging lines, and/or blind or black spots. There might also be tingling or numbness on one side of the body and an inability to speak clearly.

What You Can Do

If you have a history of migraines with auras, meet with your gynecologist to determine if another type of contraceptive is more appropriate. For instance, you may be able to take progestin—a synthetic form of progesterone—pills to avoid estrogen-based birth control.

If you develop migraines for the first time after starting birth control, let your gynecologist know. They will explain in more detail the risk-to-benefit ratio and may adjust doses or prescribe a different brand to reduce your symptoms.
