Every vehicle with an internal combustion engine has either a timing chain or belt. Both keep the rotation of the camshaft and crankshaft synchronized, which allows the valves to open and close and provide air for combustion. However, your vehicle model dictates which the engine uses. Also, an auto center will service and repair them differently. Here’s what you need to know about proper maintenance.

Why Engines Have Different Timing Systems

Up until the 1960s, timing chains were the norm, but then Pontiac® brought timing belts to the mainstream vehicles in the United States, and they are now standard components. The biggest draw for timing belts is that they operate quietly, and if they break, they won’t cause as much damage to the engine because they are located on the outside. This is why the vast majority of modern vehicles have this option.

Older vehicles still require the timing chain. Automobiles that produce a lot of torque and have a lot of horsepower do too because they are metal and can handle the added pressure. These include high-speed vehicles and those that tow heavy loads. Timing belts, however, are rubber and can’t handle that higher power.

How Maintenance Is Different

Auto CenterThe best maintenance for a timing chain is to perform regular filter and oil changes every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The chain is lubricated by the engine’s oil as it rotates, which keeps it operating efficiently and makes regular appointments for them so important.

Timing belts will need to be replaced every 100,000 miles. Always have a mechanic perform a belt inspection when you take the vehicle in to be serviced, repair any water and oil leaks immediately, and park the vehicle in your garage to avoid drastic changes in temperature.
