With the winter season quickly approaching, there are many changes to make around the home. For example, it’s worth transitioning your fall planters to winter options. Careful planning will make the process easy and stress-free. Here are several winter-appropriate plants to refresh your fall planters.

4 Plants to Use in Winter

1. Mugo Pine

A type of evergreen shrub, the mugo pine can grow up to three to five feet tall and 10 feet wide. The plant comes from conifer trees in the mountainous regions of Europe and can survive cold winters. If you’re planting it in a container outside your home, water it regularly until the soil freezes. It requires minimal maintenance and is at low risk of insect or disease problems.

2. Junipers

plantsJunipers are evergreen conifers that consist of textured bark and various needle colors. They come in a variety of different heights and are suitable for indoor container-growing. For example, the dwarf Japanese garden juniper only grows to 12 inches in height and produces purple needles in the wintertime.

3. Dwarf Alberta Spruce

This evergreen is shaped like a Christmas tree and can grow up to 13 feet tall. The plant only grows two to four inches a year and does well in cool summers and winters. Although a Dwarf Alberta Spruce requires little maintenance, it may be at risk of spider attacks. Spray a pesticide on it once a year to avoid this issue.

4. Bird’s Nest Spruce

This Norwegian shrub grows just two feet tall and is flat on top with a concave center. The plant has short, grayish-green needles and can take a decade or more to reach a mature size. It’s important to keep it moist as it’s growing. If you keep the plant in a container, re-pot it every two to three years.
