As the temperature drops, you’ll likely make changes to your wardrobe and your home to prepare for winter. But while you’re gathering hats and scarves, have you made the same effort to winterize your car? Your vehicle needs some extra attention to continue functioning properly in colder weather, from tire changes to battery checks. Use the following guide to help your ride adjust to the colder weather.

3 Auto Maintenance Tips for Winter

1. Add Deicer to Your Fuel

As you drive, you’ll use up the gas in your fuel tank, allowing moisture to enter the tank. Unfortunately, this condensation can freeze in the fall and winter, affecting your fuel’s texture and therefore its effectiveness. To prevent engine trouble, add fuel deicer to the tank on a monthly basis, starting in the fall. This will maintain the temperature and viscosity of the gas so as not to clog the fuel line.

2. Check on Your Battery

Have your battery inspected by a professional before winter arrives. They can clear away any corrosion that may have developed over time, adjust any loose connections, and check on the battery fluid level. A professional can also let you know when you’ll need a battery replacement.

3. Schedule a Tire Change

Icy roads can present a major safety hazard to drivers during the winter. Unfortunately, ordinary all-season tires simply don’t have the right tread to grip the road when it’s covered in snow or ice. By switching to winter tires, you can cruise the highway with peace of mind and avoid the dangers of hydroplaning. Once the new tires are installed, keep an eye on their pressure. If they drop below the manufacturer’s recommended PSI (pounds per square inch), you could be at a higher risk of skidding.
