Homeowners looking to install natural stone countertops often choose granite. It's durable, heat-resistant, and uniquely patterned. However, retaining these qualities does require some upkeep. Like other natural stone options, granite counters are porous, meaning they're prone to absorbing liquids, which can lead to stains, mold, and bacteria buildup. Thankfully, this can be avoided by regularly coating the surface with a sealant. To learn more about this process, here's a quick primer.

What You Need to Know About Sealing Granite Countertops

Purpose

In addition to moisture issues, granite’s porous nature can cause etching. This type of damage is a chemical reaction that dulls the surface of the stone. It’s caused by acidic substances, such as soda, coffee, orange juice, lemon juice, and vinegar. An adequate layer of sealant acts as a protective barrier to prevent etching.

Frequency

granite countersGenerally, granite counters should be sealed at least once a year. However, if you have a busy home, do so more frequently. Some people even prefer to seal their countertops every season. The easiest way to check if it's time for sealant is to do a water test. Pour a bit of water onto the surface; about two to three inches in diameter will suffice. If it stays beaded on the surface for at least five minutes, you don't need to reseal. However, if it gets absorbed, it's time for a new coating.

Method

To seal your granite counters, thoroughly clean the surface. Make sure to use a non-acidic cleaning solution; otherwise, you'll accidentally etch the surface. Use a product that's formulated for granite.

After cleaning, wipe down any excess product, and let it dry. Then, apply the sealant with a lint-free cloth, including the edges. Leave it on for about 15 minutes and wipe off any excess. Some products recommend a second coat; when in doubt, refer to the directions.
