From service vehicles to heavy-duty machinery, all sorts of valuable items are stored in commercial garages. That’s why the buildings are targeted by burglars. Intruders often gain access by dismantling garage doors, so below are tips to keep the opening secure.

Do:

Block views into the garage.

By peering through large glass panels or slits in the door, thieves can take inventory of everything inside your garage. To make it harder to see what’s inside, place tinted film over the glass.

Even if the panel is windowless, it should be kept closed when not in use. If employees are prone to forgetting, you can also place the panel on a timer to close automatically.

Limit access.

Not every employee needs to use the commercial garage, so limit access to authorized personnel only. The list should include service vehicle drivers and anyone else who uses equipment stored in the space. You can place keyless entry pads outside of the door and keep track of who is given access codes. If there is ever a security breach, you can change the codes to prevent future incidents.

Don’t:

Forget to install surveillance equipment.

Carlsbad-New-Mexico-garage-doorsSimilar to business entrances, there should be video surveillance equipment installed near your commercial garage doors. Intruders will think twice about breaking in for fear of being identified by the footage. You can pull up the video feed on a computer, tablet, or smartphone to keep an eye on the area at all times.

Fall behind with routine maintenance.

A damaged or severely worn commercial garage door is like a “welcome” sign for would-be burglars. Intruders won’t have to work too hard to dismantle a wobbly panel or trip the safety release mechanism. To make a break-in more challenging, visually inspect the installation each week and have a garage door service technician fix any problems. They can also check the balance, lubricate springs, and provide other tune-ups to prevent faulty operation.
