Most spider bites only cause minor injuries and swelling; however, there are a few North American spiders that have more serious bites, including the common black widow and the brown recluse. Both black widows and brown recluses are found in and around residential homes; if you spot one, call for pest removal services right away. However, if you have been bitten, here are a few steps to take to help mitigate the injury.

What to Do After You’ve Been Bitten by a Spider

1. Be Aware

Every region has different kinds of spiders that are more prevalent, so familiarize yourself with the most common types in your area. For instance, if black widows are native to your location, finding one in the house may signal that you have a serious infestation in the backyard that will require pest removal. If you can, you want to prevent bites from happening in the first place.

2. Identify

Bites that are itchy rather than painful are likely from mosquitoes or bugs. Spider bites often have a central puncture wound you can see. If you suspect you’ve been bitten by a spider, try to identify the type of arachnid that caused the injury. This information can help medical professionals treat you faster.

3. Clean

This will help prevent infection and scarring. If the bite is extremely painful immediately or if you have accompanying symptoms like nausea or vomiting, seek medical attention.

4. Cool

Applying a cold compress can often help with the pain and may even mitigate the swelling of the wound. If the bite is on the arm or leg, try elevating the affected limb to stop the venom from spreading. If you start to feel cramping or have trouble breathing, you may have been bitten by a poisonous spider so head to the Emergency Room immediately.

5. Treat

If you are allergic to bug or spider bites, try taking an oral, over-the-counter antihistamine. This can help keep any swelling to a minimum. If the bite is itchy, a topical cream, like Benadryl®, may also help with discomfort.
