Reducing hazards to pet health is important year-round, but holidays change your routine in ways that call for extra attention to animal safety. Many of the risks to dogs and cats that occur this time of year have to do with decorations. As you deck the halls, be mindful of the following do’s and don’ts to keep your pet healthy.

Do:

Consider an artificial tree.

Dogs and cats alike tend to drink out of the tree water, even if they have plenty of their own. Many trees are treated with chemicals to last longer, which can wind up in the water and poison your animals. To promote pet health, consider an artificial tree over a real one.

Keep candles and ornaments up high.

pet healthLit candles can get knocked over by wagging tails and cats that like to climb. If you do choose to burn them, keep them far out of reach of pets, or choose flameless alternatives.

Pets may also be drawn to low-hanging ornaments. To reduce the risk of injury or choking, keep ornaments where animals can’t reach them.

Don’t:

Decorate with toxic plants.

While holly and mistletoe can add holiday charm to your home, they can pose serious risks to pet health. They’re both highly poisonous if ingested. Poinsettias, although not poisonous, can cause gastrointestinal issues in animals. Consider fake alternatives or skipping these plants altogether.

Leave lights on while you’re gone.

Bored pets may be inclined to chew on or play with Christmas lights. To avoid any risk of electrocution, always unplug any electric decorations before leaving your home. You can also use a bitter-flavored anti-chew spray to discourage chewing on dangerous items.
