Finding a firm mattress that is comfortable and offers good support for your back can be difficult. However, once you choose one and take it home, you may find that it’s more firm than you would have liked. Luckily, this isn’t a problem. It often takes time to break in the mattress. If you’re finding it difficult to sleep, here’s how to break in a new bed.

Breaking in a Memory Foam Mattress

The memory foam in your mattress is made from several layers of highly dense foam that contorts to your body shape and supports your weight. Because of the high material density, memory foam mattresses need an extended break-in period, which can take up to two months.

Memory foam tends to soften when it gets warmer. Make your room a couple of degrees warmer than you usually do; this will ease the firmness of your mattress a bit, helping during the break-in period.

Firm MattressA freshly bought memory foam mattress will arrive compressed or rolled in a box, which upon opening may give off an unpleasant smell. Don’t be tempted to cover your bed, and let it breathe for a couple of days. Allowing the foam to get some oxygen flow will remove the smell.

Breaking in a Spring Mattress

A traditional spring mattress is built with metal coils or springs that provide lumbar support; they are cushioned by soft material. Because springs adjust to your weight, the break-in period will be shorter.

To ease the hardness of the metal coils, apply some pressure using your hands and feet. Don’t stand up and use your full body weight on specific spots, as this will create an imbalance in the springs. If you have some hefty books, stack them to provide constant pressure to the whole bed.

Finally, if you usually sleep on one side, rotate your spring mattress every couple of months. Make sure that both sides get the same amount of use so that one doesn’t end up firmer than the other.
