If you cannot work due to a disability or injury, you may qualify for financial assistance from the Social Security Administration (SSA). But, your application may be denied if you fail to follow the policies, submit accurate information, or meet the deadlines. Below are other reasons why your Social Security disability benefit may be turned down.

3 Possible Reasons Why Your Social Security Disability Claim May Be Rejected

1. You Earn a Lot

The SSA offers two disability benefit programs — Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Supplemental Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). If your unearned and earned monthly income in 2019 exceeds $1,500, your SSI application may be denied. This is because SSI is intended for low-income individuals who don’t make more than the substantial gainful activity (SGA) amount. Under the SSDI, your monthly income must not go beyond the SGA — $1,220 for nonblind individuals; otherwise, you will not qualify for Social Security benefits.

2. You Do Not Follow Proper Treatment

This is because the examiner can’t determine whether you are fit to work. However, the SSA accepts legitimate medical or nonmedical reasons you may have for failing to comply with your treatment. These reasons may include mental illness, an intense fear of surgery, or inadequate financial resources. Also, the SSA will not obligate you to continue with the procedure if your doctor declares that the procedure may not bring back your ability to perform SGA.

3. Your Injury Isn’t Severe Enough

Another Social Security disability benefit qualification for people is a severe injury that is expected to last for at least 12 months and prevents you from working. Otherwise, the SSA will deny your application because your condition still allows you to do some gainful work.
