Every Christmas tree needs a tree skirt. Not only do they complement your holiday decorations, but they also disguise the less attractive parts of your tree, such as the base. Instead of tossing a red fleece blanket on the floor, why not create something with more personality? Whether you use spandex or another fabric, making a one-of-a-kind holiday-themed tree skirt is fun and simple with these tips.

5 Steps to Sewing a Christmas Tree Skirt

1. Choose Your Fabric

Visit your favorite fabric store and browse their fabrics and materials, including spandex and denim. You’ll need 2 yards of your chosen fabric for the skirt itself and 2 yards of fabric for the lining. Additionally, you’ll need a tape measure, scissors, a fabric marking pen, thread, and pins and needles.

2. Choose a Fabric Size

Choose a size for your skirt that matches the diameter of your tree at the widest point. Overlay the fabric for the lining on top of the skirt’s material. Measure an equal distance from the center pin and mark it, pivoting the fabric pen and marking a circle. Fold the layered materials in half and use the marks to cut the circular shape for your skirt.

3. Make an Opening

spandexYou’ll need to cut a circle to accommodate the trunk of the tree. Keep the two folded edges tightly aligned, and mark a circle using the same technique as above. Keep the opening to no more than 5 inches in diameter. With the fabric folded, cut the hole using the marks as a guide.

4. Create a Slit

Keep the two layers of fabric aligned on top of each other and cut a straight line from the center opening to the outer edge. This opening allows your skirt to fit around the base of your tree. To tie it together, you can pin strips of ribbon on both sides of the opening, so they line up.

5. Start Sewing

Stitch along the edge of the outer circle, sewing up one side of the slit. Continue sewing around the center circle, down the other side, and complete the circle. Leave a half-inch space along the edge to add a trim. Make sure the ribbon is aligned, and stitch it into the fabric, too.
