If you're storing electronics — like televisions or computers — long term, they need to be stored correctly to prevent them from getting damaged. Moisture, dust, and pests can cause problems, and you also want to protect your belongings from impacts or falls. Follow these basic steps to protect your electronics in storage.

How Can You Keep Electronics Safe in Self-Storage?

1. Disassemble Your Equipment

To keep cords and connectors from wearing out, unplug everything before you store the device. If there's complex wiring or multiple connections involved, take a photo of your setup first to help you remember how to reassemble it. Check for other removable items, such as disks or flash drives, and return them to their protective casing if possible.

2. Label All Components

StorageStore all the disassembled parts with the device they were originally connected to. This way, you’ll be able to put it back together easily when you take it out of storage. Make sure each part is labeled in case something gets lost in the process.

Next, list the components of each box on its exterior. If you have more than one box holding the same set of equipment, add that information to the label so you won't forget. For example, if you have three boxes of cords and speakers for your sound system, the first one could be labeled "Sound System, 1 of 3."

3. Pack Carefully

The ideal container for electronic items is their original packaging, including any foam padding. If that's not possible, use a sturdy box larger than the object and fill it with soft cushioning materials to protect it.

Make sure to pad screens and monitors, as they're prone to cracking. Seal the box thoroughly and cover all the corners, both to reinforce the box and to keep pests out.
