Colder weather means it’s time to close and lock your windows, but if they aren’t well maintained, they can still leak in cold air. In fact, one-third of your home’s heat is lost through creaky windows and doors alone. Taking certain precautions in the fall can keep you from needing replacement windows or parts in the winter, as listed below.

How to Care for Your Windows This Fall

1. Clean Them

Debris such as dirt, pebbles, and twigs can collect in your windows during windy days—especially if you have them open. Clean away any dirt and debris before the winter arrives to prevent them from scratching the glass. Additionally, it is easier to check for holes or cracks if there isn’t debris or dirt buildup in the way. Make an at-home cleaner with two cups of water, ¼ cup of vinegar, and ½ teaspoon of dish soap. Double the recipe for floor-to-ceiling windows.

2. Seal Gaps

WindowCheck for gaps around the entire perimeter. Refill small gaps around the frame with caulking. For large holes—or a lot of them—you may need to re-caulk everything. This should be done every five years. Replace the weather stripping if there are cracks around the sashes. The combination of caulking and weather stripping can save up to 10% on your energy bill.

3. Replace Them

Cracked glass and sills can let cold air into your home, so it’s best to repair them before the winter arrives. Consult a professional to determine if you need complete window replacement or just a single part. Schedule any work in the fall, so you don’t find yourself with a draft during the winter.
