Winter weather poses many threats to your health and safety, and this applies to your furry friends as well. Being mindful of pet health is crucial any time your dog goes outdoors. Whether you’re a new or experienced dog owner, keep the following in mind when you venture outside with your pet.

How to Protect Dogs This Winter

1. Help Them Bundle Up

pet-health-monroe-countyNo matter how thick your dog’s coat is, they’re still susceptible to freezing temperatures. If you’re going for a long walk in the snow, cover them with a dog sweater or coat. These will provide plenty of insulation to protect them from the elements. Do your best to keep them dry — rolling in snow or ice can increase the effects of the cold.

2. Clean Their Paws

Sidewalk salt and deicers can pose a pet health risk to your dog. Larger grains may become stuck between their paws. Antifreeze and deicer are toxic when ingested, so wipe down your pet's paws to eliminate any residue they may have picked up while outside. This is a good time to look for paw injuries, such as cracking or bleeding, that may require a trip to the veterinary clinic.

3. Limit Time Outside

If the weather outside feels cold to you, it’s probably cold for your dog too. Limit the time your dog spends outside, and provide opportunities for them to exercise indoors. If you let your dog outside to play during cold weather, keep their outdoor sessions short. Keep an eye on them so you can open the door when they’re ready to come back inside.
