As you prepare for winter, you have to keep the lawn in mind and follow a few necessary winterizing steps. These will not only protect your features—like the irrigation system—and foliage, but they will also ensure you’re ready for healthy spring growth once the snow melts. Use the following tips for the best results.

How to Prepare the Lawn for Winter

1. Aerate & Fertilize

To ensure the lawn receives all the nutrients it needs throughout winter, aerate one last time. By punching holes in the soil, you ensure that roots can receive the sunlight and nutrients they need more easily. You can also lay down a layer of fertilizer to promote plant healing and growth. Come spring, the plants will be ready to grow and thrive.

2. Mow

Remove leaves and debris that may contribute  to issues or attract insects. Once the lawn is clear, consider adding a layer of mulch around plant and tree beds to keep the roots warm.

3. Clear the Irrigation System

Freezing temperatures can cause serious issues in the piping of the irrigation system. For example, sitting water will expand and may break the pipes. Prevent this problem by clearing the irrigation system. Cut off the water supply and blast pipes with pressurized air to clear remaining water. It’s wise to keep the system disconnect from the water line to ensure there isn’t an accidental release.
