When cooler temperatures and winter weather are just around the corner, it's important to check your roof and ensure it is strong for the months ahead. With the impending season's marked increase in cold, snow, ice, freezing rain, and biting wind, a sturdy roof offers protection for your home and family. Below are three parts of your residential roofing to check, so it’s in excellent shape.

A Guide to Fall Maintenance for Residential Roofing

1. Gutters

These components carry water away from the roof and prevent snow and ice buildup, damage, and leaks. Clean them to remove leaves, dirt, and other debris that could cause clogs and water overflow during the winter. Backup can lead to ice dams and undue pressure on the roof.

2. Shingles

It is remarkably easy for a strong wind to catch a corner of a shingle, curl or tear it, or break it off entirely.

Also, a phenomenon called “lifting” is wind-related damage that can affect newer roofs. Because the adhesive seal holding the shingles down hasn’t had enough time to set, strong winds make the shingles rise. Even though they're still secured with nails, the seal can break. Lifting is often not obvious from the ground and can make a roof susceptible to leaks during winter.

3. Attic

Proper attic insulation prevents heat loss and keeps the home more comfortable in the winter, and the vents promote healthy airflow that safeguards the space from moisture. Issues with attic vents can result in roof leaks, mold growth, and insect or pest infestations. Confirm that attic vents are free of leaves, dirt, and other grime. Also, visually inspect the attic ceiling and walls for any signs of leaks, such as drips or wet spots.
