Your new dentures might have you smiling with more confidence, but they can take some time to get used to. Experiencing some issues during the first few weeks with them is normal, and a dentist can help you feel more comfortable. The following are some of the most common problems you might face and what you can do about them.

How Can You Fix Common Denture Problems?

1. Trouble Eating

Some patients with new dentures might find it difficult to eat, especially during the first few days. You might notice that it’s uncomfortable to chew solid foods or that the dentures feel strange when chewing. To start, eat soft foods such as mashed potatoes, soup, hot cereals, and yogurt. You can start introducing more solid food as you get used to them, but stay away from foods like hard nuts and sticky candy.

If you feel like the dentures are sliding or pinching while you eat, call a dentist. They may need to check their size.

2. Infections

denturesAnyone who wears dentures may be at risk for mouth infections, such as cheilitis and stomatitis. These are both caused by an overgrowth of yeast. If you are experiencing inflammation of the gums, mouth pain, red bumps on the roof of your mouth, or unusual redness, visit a dentist. They can treat the infection and recommend methods for prevention.

You can prevent these infections by cleaning your mouth daily, soaking and cleaning the dentures, and washing your hands before handling the dentures. They should also fit properly, and you should avoid touching your mouth.

3. Slippage

As you get used to the dentures, you might notice them slipping in your mouth occasionally. Smiling and eating may make them slide, even if they fit well. A dentist can show you how to hold them in place with your cheeks when smiling. However, you should also talk to the dentist about an adhesive. A quality adhesive product can prevent slipping and make you feel more comfortable.
