Transitioning your child to day care can be a difficult adjustment. Even when you’ve chosen the best child care program around, it probably still feels like you’re not doing enough. However, it’s possible to make this transition work for you and your child.

How to Help You and Your Kid Make the Move to Children’s Day Care

1. Visit Beforehand

Most child care centers will let you visit so that both you and your child can get comfortable before the move. You may be able to observe your child as they participate in day care activities. Your child can acclimate with the comfort of knowing you’re in the room. If you can’t visit together, you can bring your child to the outside of the building to give them some familiarity with their new environment.

2. Transition Gradually

If your child has separation anxiety, this might help. The teacher can let you know how your child behaves and recommend a timeline. Your child may be ready for a full day sooner than you think.

3. Don’t Draw Out Goodbyes

Overdoing goodbyes is one of the mistakes that many parents make. Instead of crying or clinging to your child, give them a firm goodbye and tell them you’ll see each other later. They’re more likely to feel reassured and not as sad.
