If you’re looking for a creative, functional hobby, learning to make quilts is an excellent choice. This traditional skill offers a host of benefits, allowing you to improve your hand-eye coordination and walk away from each project with a tangible product. However, as a beginner, there are a few tips you should follow to really hone your skills. For the best results, utilize the do’s and don’ts listed below.

Do:

Start small.

Starting with a large, complicated quilt can quickly lead to frustration, confusion, and mistakes. Rather than attempting a queen-size blanket with multiple patterns and fabrics, start small with something basic. A crib-size quilt with a simple pattern will allow you to focus on learning basic sewing skills, so when you’re ready to move on to something larger, you’re less likely to make mistakes.

quiltPick a quality fabric

You should pick a quality fabric, made of 100% cotton. Good fabric will help your fabric not stretch. Cotton fabric is also natural, hypoallergenic, non-flammable and washable for your finished product.  Visit a store with quilting fabric and reach out to staff for any questions.

Choosing fabric for your quilt can feel overwhelming, but it's a great time to let your creativity flow. While shopping, browse fabrics and pick the colors you want to use and the pattern you want to create on your quilt.

Don’t:

Make the backing, batting, and front the same size.

Whenever you start a project, measure the batting and backing a few inches wider than the front piece of fabric. If you don’t the batting will eventually be exposed as the fabric shifts throughout the stitching process. If the batting is still a bit longer at the end of the project, simply trim the edges.

Be afraid to make your own design.

As a beginner, you might worry about straying from tried-and-true designs. But the purpose of creating a quilt is to have fun and make something unique. If you feel inspired, don’t be afraid to whip out some paper and create your own pattern. Not only will it provide you with the opportunity to test your design skills, but it will leave you with a one-of-a-kind quilt at the end.
