Winter’s almost here, but is your deck ready for the cold weather? Even if your deck seems to be in good condition, the significant temperature drop that winter brings can wreak havoc on the structure. Deck builders suggest that you prep your decking ahead of winter to preserve its structural integrity.

How to Prepare Your Deck for Winter

1. Clear the Area

If deck builders added planting spots to your deck, you’ll have to clear these out for winter. Remove anything that contributes to humidity such as planters, leaves, dirt, and debris. Aside from being potential breeding grounds for mold and mildew, these may also leave discolored patches on your deck.

Store your deck furniture to protect them from the harsh, cold months. As you move the furniture, make sure to carefully lift the pieces to avoid leaving skid marks on the deck’s surface.

2. Give It a Thorough Cleaning

You can also create your own cleaning solution. Combine 3 quarts of water, 1-quart oxygen-based bleach, and ¼ cup ammonia-free liquid dishwashing soap. Spray it over stained areas and let it stand for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing it with water.

3. Seal or Stain It

Sealing or staining is one of the most crucial steps of preparing your deck for winter. Leaving your deck unprotected ruins its finish and can also cause severe warping on its surfaces. In mid-to-late October, ask your deck builders to apply a water repellent sealer or stain to your deck. The coating will shield the structure from the moisture that could seep into the wood's tiny crevices.
