You might have closed down your swimming pool for the winter, but that doesn’t mean you should forget about it altogether. It is essential to continue with pool maintenance during the colder months to make sure your pool is in working order when you come to use it again. Below are some tips for maintaining your swimming pool when the temperature falls.

3 Pool Maintenance Tips for Winter

1. Keep the Pool Cover in Good Condition

Swimming poolA pool cover is necessary for protecting your pool in winter. Allowing large amounts of water to sit on the cover, however, will damage it. Water could freeze and tear plastics and vinyls.

Don’t try to remove ice from a cover as it may slice into your cover (and possibly a liner too). Wait for a warmer day when the ice melts and use a cover pump or siphon to dispel the water.

2. Keep Water Clean & Balanced

Debris may find its way into a pool even if covered. While cleaning it out during winter is rarely possible, make sure you let your service provider know if a vacuum will be needed with your opening. Dirt, leaves, and debris could clog the filter and the pump if a lot has accumulated in the off-season. Use an agent to kill algae and check the pH balance at least twice a month to determine if the water chemistry needs alteration. The right acid-versus-alkali balance protects equipment and stops scale from forming.

3. Don’t Let Water Reach Your Tiles

If you have a tiled pool, don’t allow water to reach their level. Water freezes and expands and may damage them. Although keeping some water in a swimming pool during the winter is recommended to protect liners, it should never remain on the tiles during freezing conditions.
