You use the faucets in your home every day. Whether you’re washing your hands, doing the dishes, or filling the tub for the kids’ baths, you depend on them to work reliably. Because of this constant use, even smaller issues with your faucets can cause significant stress. Fixing worn or damaged faucets is a job for a qualified plumber, but knowing when to make that call isn’t always easy. Here are a few ways to know it’s time for a replacement.

When to Consider Getting New Faucets

1. Leaks

A drippy faucet can be a straightforward repair, especially if the rest of the fixture is still in good condition. If the faucet is continuously producing a few drips even when off, you likely need to replace the O-ring inside the fixture. However, if replacing the O-ring doesn’t fix the drip or the rest of the faucet looks worn, it could be a sign of a more complicated issue. Leaks from the area where the handles meet the base of the sink or the wall can cause costly damage and mean the entire unit needs to be replaced.

2. Corrosion

Internal rusting can also create leaks that can’t be repaired with a new O-ring or seal. Prolonged, frequent exposure to moisture eventually causes rust as your fixture’s finish wears away, and replacement is the only solution.

3. Mineral Buildup

Mineral buildup—usually calcium or limescale—may occur if you have hard water. The first sign of mineral buildup is discoloration, especially whitening, at the spout. These mineral deposits clog the aerator, which decreases your water pressure until they are scrubbed out. Extensive mineral growth, especially inside the fixture, will destroy the finish of your faucet and require a plumber to remove.
