Storage units are a fantastic way to store belongings during a period of transition or to free up space at home. However, not all items are allowed. Objects that may cause damage to the unit or neighboring units, or attract unwanted pests, are not allowed. The list below offers a brief guide of what should never go into a storage unit.

Restricted Items for Storage Units

1. Perishables

Never store food in storage facilities. Foods not packaged properly will attract rodents and insects, and put off an odor throughout the facility. Perishables include pet foods.

2. Smelly Objects

You can store perfumes and colognes if they are secure in a plastic container, with no chance of leaking out. Odors can sink into wooden items or clothing in other units and can trigger allergies or asthma in neighboring tenants.

3. Volatile Materials

These substances include gasoline, propane, motor oil, fertilizers, aerosol cans, fireworks, radioactive materials, weed killers, and toxic or biological waste. Items that store these materials, such as propane tanks and lawnmowers, are also restricted.

4. Illegal Items

Stolen or other illegal items are not allowed in storage facilities. If prohibited items are with legal ones, and you break your contract, you could lose all items in the unit.

5. Disabled Vehicles

Most storage units do allow vehicles, but they must be licensed and have current tags. Storage units do not allow tenants to work on their cars because of liability concerns.
